Alameda County Department of Public Health: PF partnered with health educators that work with the school-based health centers at Middle Schools throughout Alameda County to pilot, evaluate and develop a YPAR based curriculum for broader use in the 2012/2013 school year. POP ED 101: A multi-year workshop series hosted by the Center for Political Education for organizers and educators to explore the theories and practices of popular education. Trainings included Freire 101, Participatory Action Research, and Theater of the Oppressed.

CUAV: PF supported Communities United Against Violence through both the Freire and Pop Ed workshops at CPE, and a tailored Image Theater workshop for staff and members.

Public Profit:PF worked with Public Profit to support their Youth-Led Evaluation component of a broader evaluation they did of the Oakland Fund for Children and Youth (OFCY). You can download their report here: Youth Evaluation Team Final Report

Heal the Streets: PF recently finished 3 years of working with Heal the Streets, the  youth program of Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, started by Crystallee Crain. We supported a Youth Led Participatory Action Research project each year with facilitation and curriculum design. We just finished a Forum Theater-based PAR project focusing on the root causes of violence, culminating in a youth-led communication curriculum and workshop. With the 2011 Fellows we investigated causes, effects and solutions to racial profiling and bias based policing in Oakland by interviewing Oakland Police Department and BART police officers, and young people impacted by racial profiling. We finished by presenting to community leaders and city representatives. In 2010 we explored the connection between youth violence and teen employment opportunities.

Berkeley High School Green Academy: PF wrote curriculum for and coached Amanda Salzman in conducting two YPAR classes to develop action or social venture projects in 13 small groups.

Ashoka Youth Venture Just Food Program: Practicing Freedom provided curriculum direction, facilitation coaching and training to the facilitation team of the 10 week intensive social venture program in which 10 teams of young people developed business plans  for small ventures that help to create food justice.

Camp Little Notch: PF provided support to a new organization working to develop a social justice based camp for all girls. Support has included staff training, curriculum design and program advising.

Amazon Watch: We worked with the Brazil Campaign supporting the communication, messaging and art strategy for the coalition that is working to stop the Belo Monte Dam from being constructed and displacing thousands of people.

Fresh Flava : A Youth-Led Participatory Action Research Project with young people from five different food justice organizations from San Francisco and Oakland who investigated how to educate their peers to make a just food system a right in the Bay Area. They surveyed hundreds of people and organized and facilitated focus groups with key governmental and organizational representatives who work on food issues locally, who we then presented our report to. Climate Justice TO: We organized, co-directed the development of a Forum Theater piece (from Theater of the Oppressed) about climate change that was publically performed in the streets in the Fruitvale, at La Pena, and Mobilization For Climate Justice West Coast Summit.

El Teatro Campesino: Two years facilitating giant puppet builds for the production of The Popol Vuh, the Mayan book of creation. 2011 Levana was Puppet Director for Part 1: Heart of Heaven to help create Gucumatz, a giant plumed serpent, the grandparent dieties – Xpiyacoc and Xmucane, mud people, wood people, corn people, deer, birds and snakes, using mostly cardboard and paper mache. For pictures and performances, visit El Teatro Campesino In 2010 Levana facilitated the creation of a puppets and headdresses for their production of Part 2 of the Popol Vuh, called Seven Macaw including a giant Chimalmat puppet made by carving into the ground to create the mold and sculpting the faces of Seven Macaw and other dieties into clay, then covered with paper mache.

Monterey County Youth Employment project: Supported four sites in Monterey County run Youth-Led Participatory Action Research projects. They chose to focus on the impacts of the economy on youth, drug use among teens, violence and the creation of a youth center.
